Sit upright without a backrest. The Gokhale® Wedge 2.0 is a firm seat wedge that gently tips your pelvis forward. Your vertebrae stack like building blocks over your sitz bones, and you sit upright without effort. It works on dining chairs, stools, benches, piano benches and any other seat where you sit freely.

The principle: stacksitting

Most people sit either slumped or upright and tense. Slumping rounds the back, and sitting upright with effort quickly tires the muscles. In stacksitting, as taught by the Gokhale Method®, the pelvis is tipped slightly forward. The spine then rests balanced on the sitz bones and the back muscles can relax. The Wedge creates exactly this pelvic position.

Benefits

  • Effortlessly upright: Your spine is supported by the position of your pelvis, not by muscle power.
  • Relaxed back: Your back muscles can let go and you breathe more freely.
  • Four angles: Round or flat side up, plus two long edges of different steepness, so you can find the slope that suits you.
  • Non-slip: The PU leather base keeps it in place, even on smooth wooden chairs.
  • Firm and stable: High-resiliency, pre-compressed foam gives comfortably without sagging.
  • Easy care: The cover is removable and washable.

How to use it

Setup: Place the Wedge crosswise on the seat where your sitz bones will land. The flat side up is a good place to start. With the round side up, your pelvis tips further forward.

  1. Sit down: Hinge forward at the hips and push your bottom back as you lower yourself down.
  2. Position: Place the front of your sitz bones on the wedge. If needed, reach under and pull your buttocks back.
  3. Straighten up: Bring your upper body upright and find the sweet spot where your back is neither arched nor rounded. Your spine should feel stacked over your sitz bones, and your back moves freely with your breath.
  4. Fine-tune: Roll your shoulders back, anchor your ribs and lengthen your neck.

Tip: Try both sides and both edges. If you feel like you are sliding forward off the chair, the slope is too steep. Choose the lower edge or the flat side instead. The video below shows how to position the Wedge and your body. To learn stacksitting in person, join a Gokhale Method course.

FAQ

Which chairs does it work on?
It works best on seats where you do not lean back: dining chairs, stools, benches, piano benches or the front half of an office chair.

Can I use the Wedge in the car?
No. In a car you should always lean against the seat's backrest. For the car, we recommend the Stretchsit® Cushion.

Which side goes up?
Either. With the flat side up, you can fine-tune the angle by sitting further forward or back. With the round side up, the pelvis tips forward the most. In addition, one of the two long edges is slightly lower than the other.

The Wedge feels unusual. Is that normal?
Yes. If you have been sitting slumped for a long time, the new pelvic position takes a little while to feel natural. Finding the right position takes some experimenting at first. The video and a course will help.

Is the Wedge soft?
It is deliberately firm. A soft, shallow wedge would give way and not hold your pelvis in the right position.

Does it replace medical treatment?
No. The Gokhale® Wedge is a seating aid, not a medical device. If you have persistent discomfort, please consult your doctor.
